About this barcode type:
EAN 13 is used for retail items and is the most common barcode used in shops throughout the world.
EAN 13 is encoded as thirteen digits. Format AA BBBBB CCCCC D. Prefix, e.g. UK barcodes always begin with 50. Manufacturer number - Available to ANA member companies. Product number - Allocated by ANA. Check digit - Calculated from the other numbers.
The US and Canada use a version of this barcode type called UPCa or UPC 12: the bars scan the same number as EAN13 but only 12 numbers are displayed underneath the bars including an extra zero at the beginning.

About this barcode type:
EAN 8 is used for small retail items throughout the world.
Format AA CCCCC D
This number is only available for reasonably small items, such as cosmetics, where EAN13 is simply too big. When placed into an EAN 13 field the EAN 8 number is implied to have five noughts at the beginning of the barcode.

About this barcode type:
These barcodes allow reliable scanning of low quality print primarily for distribution purposes. Digits are grouped into two so only an even number of digits can be encoded. Pad odd numbers with preceding zeros. Usually represented as 13 digits plus 1 check digit (ITF14) it can encode an EAN13 with a preceding zero, for outer cases containing many items. NOT to be confused with Industrial 2 of 5.

General purpose alphanumeric barcode type rapidly gaining supremecy over the older barcode 39.
